I grew up with only fragments of my family’s history. My parents immigrated from China, and I was born and raised in the States, where my connection to my heritage was limited. Chinese music has become a way for me to reconnect with my culture and heritage.
This song, 花桥流水 (roughly translated to 'Flower Bridge, Flowing Water'), gave me insight on courtship and love. It is structured as a call-and-response between a young man and woman in love. They flirt, with the man asking the woman to sing a song while he plays the lusheng (a Hmong musical instrument), and the woman offers him a sip of rice wine.
Of course, my ancestors likely never participated in this specific ritual, but the song made me aware that they, too, were once young and flirtatious. This painting is inspired by that – rather than imagining them only through hardship or migration, I could picture moments of attraction, humor, and tenderness that rarely survive in family narratives. -
