I remember stepping onto a quiet street and seeing that fall had taken over. Large piles of yellow and brown leaves covered the ground. Above them, fiery reds and oranges still clung to the branches, layered to look like a flame. It was like the tree was setting itself on fire, pruning for the winter.
I think of all the changing of seasons I’ve lived through, without truly seeing them. As a child, my attention was captured by glowing screens, and I cared little for the world around me. But attention can return. Observation can be practiced. As I turned outwards again, I found much contentment and wonder in watching the cyclic rhythms of nature growing and decaying.
For this painting I tried to capture that last spark of warmth before winter – like embers, burning out – yet still fierce and radiant in the moment. -
