So, hot take, but I LOVE oppressively hot summer days.
You know, when going outside feels like stepping into a sauna, when you can fry an egg on the sidewalk, and the cicadas are chirping nonstop.
Maybe it’s because I spent so many childhood summers in China, where the heat was actually so ridiculous. Like, my sister passed out from a heatstroke once level ridiculous. And somehow, I guess my fond memories of catching sea urchin and riding bikes with my grandparents got tangled up with the brutal heat — like some kind of weird, nostalgic Stockholm syndrome.
And now, as an adult, my favorite summer experience is one where you endure spiking temperatures all day, and in the evening, the heat breaks with a beautiful red sunset.
Kids come out to play, adults go out on little strolls, an ice cream truck pulls up, and the sky is a brilliant red-orange, like you can see the day’s heat bleeding away into the cool night.
This painting is that moment! -
