  • Harbor in the Big Blue Waves is part of my series Drifting Through Suburbia, a body of work reflecting on the emotional complexity of returning home during periods of uncertainty and transition.

This piece was created soon after Ocean’s Embrace, when I first began taking my art seriously. I was standing in my childhood room, staring at the largest canvas I had ever painted on. Its blankness felt intimidating — I had no idea how I was going to fill all that space, and the voices of self-doubt in my head grew ever louder.

But I was surrounded by familiarity – I was in my childhood room. I had painted those walls, covered them with prints I’d collected over the years. Sunlight poured through the windows and stretched across the wooden floorboards, bringing back memories of sleepovers, movie nights beneath blankets, and afternoons spent making art with friends.

Slowly, the painting began to take shape around the feeling I was searching for most: comfort, calmness, and reassurance. While my thoughts churned with uncertainty about the future, the familiar spaces of home offered a kind of emotional harbor — a quiet place to steady myself amid the turbulence I carried internally.
