Glade is part of my series Drifting Through Suburbia, a body of work reflecting on the emotional complexity of returning home during periods of uncertainty and transition.
Glade was made soon after Brook, during a period when I had begun pulling myself out of a cycle of paralyzing anxiety for my career path and distraction with technology.
One morning, I sat in my backyard — a place I had known for over a decade — and saw it differently. The winterberry tree arched overhead, bursting with red berries, while squirrels ran through the branches. Robins, sparrows, and cardinals fluttered about, chirping brightly beneath an uninterrupted blue sky.
Nothing about the space had changed, and yet it suddenly felt vivid to me in a way it never had before. I began to realize how easily familiarity can fade into the background when we become trapped inside our own head. By slowing down and opening myself back up to the world around me, even the most ordinary suburban spaces revealed unexpected beauty, tenderness, and life.
